The Providence Cutting Sessions is designed with the composer in mind as well as the player. One of the goals of the Providence Cutting Sessions is to help revive public interest in jazz by offering artists exposure online, and the opportunity to have their art performed live. Another one of our goals is to compile a book of new jazz tunes. These new tunes will be collected and published in a new real book called "The Providence Real Book"
Active participants in the program are encouraged to submit new charts. Charts need to be submitted for review and editing before they will be posted online. When an artist posts a tune online, he/she will get his/her own section with a small bio and picture in order to help promote that artist.
Criteria for submitting original tunes:
All compositions must have melodies that are original. The chord progressions of famous tunes may be used as a guide. Common techniques include:
Substituting, Reharmonizing, or changing the orignal chord progression
Transposing
Changing meters
Changing styles/feels
Etc.
No melody can be published by BMI, ASCAP or any other major publishing agency.
Artists must be willing to donate their work to The Providence Real Book.
Charts should be in lead sheet format. Refer to any real book for reference.
Charts must be submitted for review by the Providence Cutting Sessions board before being posted online, or offered at live events.
Tunes MUST NOT have offensive titles or lyrics.
Composer's must inform PCS which liscense they wish to place on their tunes.
Copywriting
Providence Cutting Sessions licences the tunes in the Providence Real Book with Creative Commons. Creative Commons licences are based on the existing copyright law. That means that anything that is usually covered under copyright law - such as compositions - are protected whenever a composition is registered with Creative Commons. Providence Cutting Sessions uses Creative Commons for compositions submitted to the Providence Real Book so that everybody's compositions can be protected.
When a Creative Commons licence is attached to a composition, it acts exactly like any other copywright. with Creative Commons, the composer gets to choose exactly what rights are attached to their composition(s).
It is free to obtain a Creative Commons licence. A Creative Commons liscence is required for any composition to be included in the Providence Real Book.
To illustrate the different ways a Creative Commons licence can be applied, here are the options for a licence:
This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, in terms of what others can do with your works licensed under Attribution.
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use.
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they don't have to license their derivative works on the same terms.
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute your work just like the by-nc-nd license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new stories based on your work. All new work based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also be non-commercial in nature.
Attribution Non-commercial No Derivatives (by-nc-nd)
This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, allowing redistribution. This license is often called the "free advertising" license because it allows others to download your works and share them with others as long as they mention you and link back to you, but they can't change them in any way or use them commercially. This is the default liscense that is used on all submissions unless the artist specifically states otherwise. This is the liscense that appears on all current PCS tunes.
